Hello, my name is Matthew Vaughan, and my company is called Material Matters Studio; a Carpentry and Joinery firm specialising in the restoration of traditionally constructed buildings and their timber features. We work with windows, doors, architectural joinery, historic glazing and their retrofitting. Where restoration is impractical or impossible we offer the manufacture of replica period features which comply with modern regulations for your comfort of living. With a keen interest in materiality and the provenance of materials used in restoration, research and practice are informed by the historic president and contemporary insight to provide the best protection and rejuvenation of our surviving historic architectural features.

Our restoration process utilizes reclaimed pitch pine sourced from beams salvaged from demolished mills in the area. This allows us to seamlessly match existing timber and maintain the historical accuracy of your home. We employ time-honoured techniques such as piecing in and Dutchman repairs to address damaged sections, ensuring a flawless finish. For smaller patch repairs, we rely on traditional materials like linseed putty and oakum. To protect and enhance the beauty of the restored wood, we exclusively use Brouns & Co Linseed oil paint for decoration.

We specialize in the H5 glazing method, a discreet solution that retains the traditional putty aesthetic while protecting the IGU's sealant from the elements and prolonging its lifespan.
